Alev Aksoy Croutier

Alev Aksoy Croutier was born in Izmir, Turkey. She studied at Robert College in Istanbul and later Art History at Oberlin College in the US. She has taught at Dartmouth, Goddard, and San Francisco State Universities. She wrote and directed films in Japan, Turkey, Europe, and the US. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (the first ever for a screenplay) for Tell Me a Riddle. She has received many awards and honors—among them National Women’s Political Caucus, McGrew Hill Film award, Best Editor of the Year, Woman of the Year by Daughters of Ataturk award, and American Turkish Council cultural award, Rotary Club Lifetime achievement award. Croutier founded Mercury House publishing company in San Francisco and worked as the executive editor for almost a decade, editing numerous books and actively supporting writers in diverse cultures in getting published. Her articles have appeared in both literary and mainstream magazines, as well as anthologies (Roots & Branches, Istanbul, I Should Have Stayed Home). She lectures frequently at universities, museums, libraries, and conferences on Orientalism, Middle Eastern women, harems, and Turkey.
